Elder Sophrony and the Experience of God in Religion and Science Dialogue

Professor Metallinos from the University of Athens, states that the “The scientist and professor of the knowledge of the Uncreated, in the Orthodox Tradition, is the Geron/Starets (the Elder or Spiritual Father), the guide or "teacher of the desert".  These are the ones that speak experientially about God from within the context of the Church, which means it moves beyond individual experience and carries with it an inter-subjective quality.  This paper examines the writings of Elder Sophrony to explore the problem of knowledge in science and in Orthodoxy, and how the two might relate (or not) to each other.
